Materials needed:
- Cosplay clay
- Black paint or inking pen
- Red paint—I used Plaid Fx Red Smooth Satin
- Circle pattern
- Yo-yo
- Gorilla glue or contact cement
- Belt
- Bowl of water
- Clean space to work on
- Paintbrush—one thin and one thicker, the thin one in case you decide to go with black paint instead of an inking pen
Step 1.
Collect all of your materials. In all honesty, this step is pretty much self-explanatory.
Step 2.
Create your circle pattern from construction paper or cardboard. Make it at least the size of a quarter or a dime.
Step 3.
Grab your cosplay EVA foam clay and make half of a ball. To shape it and make it look like it was originally apart of the yo-yo- try shaping it on it. It should look like the picture to the side. Then let it dry for a full day. Repeat this for the other side.
Step 4.
Now here’s the fun part! Take your red paint and your slightly thicker paintbrush and paint the entire half-sphere red. This will take about two to three coats to look completely awesome. Make sure to let each coat dry in between of course. Repeat this for the other sphere.
Step 5.
Now, lightly trace the circle pattern onto your half-spheres using either a pencil or tracing chalk. You’ll want five of them in a square-like pattern. It will look like the picture to the side when you’re done.
Step 6.
Now that it’s traced, take either your inking pen or your black paint and cover your circles completely. I chose to use an inking pen personally because it gave me more control to paint the circles without the possibility of painting outside of the circles.
Step 7.
Once your spheres are painted and contain their circles it is time to glue them on their perspective sides of the yo-yo. I highly recommend using contact cement since its drying time is faster, but gorilla glue works just as well. I myself had to use gorilla glue seeing that I was completely out of contact cement when I made this.
Step 8.
Finally, we’re to the last step. Just take that belt you got, wrap the yo-yo string around it and thread it through one of the belt loops, and make a firm knot. Voila! You my friend, now have a finished Ladybug yo-yo!
